Immunity Granted in Toshakhana Case: Zardari and Others Cleared

In a recent development, the Accountability Court in Islamabad has granted President Asif Ali Zardari presidential immunity in the Toshakhana case. This immunity extends to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, and others involved. Judge Nasir Javed Rana, in a written order, confirmed this immunity for Zardari.

The case revolves around allegations made by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the acquisition of three vehicles, including models such as BMW 750 Li 2004 and Toyota Lexus Jeep 472 2007, which were gifts from the embassies of the United Arab Emirates and Libya, respectively.

Additionally, gifts from Toshakhana, an official repository for gifts from foreign dignitaries, were also involved, allegedly violating established rules and regulations.

Nawaz Sharif has taken a step forward by filing an acquittal application in the Toshakhana case. The judgment cites Article 248(2) of the Constitution, which provides immunity to the president, preventing any legal action during their tenure. The prosecution did not oppose the president’s plea, leading to its approval and a halt in case proceedings until the end of Zardari’s presidency.
