Actress Ushna Shah has opened up about her personal struggle with elevated testosterone levels, attributing it to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Ushna highlighted that this condition affects approximately one in five women in Pakistan, shedding light on a prevalent yet often misunderstood health issue.
In her Instagram story and tweet, Shah emphasized that PCOS leads to higher levels of testosterone, the male sex hormone, which can result in symptoms such as increased muscle strength and body hair, a condition known medically as hirsutism. Despite these challenges, Shah asserted her identity as a woman, underscoring that her femininity remains intact despite the hormonal imbalance.
“Many women, including myself, face these complications due to PCOS,” Shah noted. “It’s crucial for people to understand that high testosterone levels do not diminish one’s female identity or qualities.” She expressed frustration over outdated and incorrect notions that equate elevated testosterone levels with being male or part of a third gender.
Shah also pointed out that environmental changes and modern lifestyles have exacerbated the prevalence of PCOS, contributing to its growing incidence. She mentioned that her own experience has given her additional energy and strength, yet she remains firmly rooted in her feminine identity and beauty.
The actress’s comments come in the wake of recent controversy involving Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who was controversially rejected as a female competitor at the Paris Olympics due to high testosterone levels. Khalif, however, maintains her identity as a woman, supported by her female ID card and passport, as affirmed by the International Olympic Committee.
