Tarbela: WAPDA Chairman visited the Tarbela Fifth Expansion Project recently. The chairman of WAPDA minutely inspected major construction sites including technical tunnel and powerhouse, while reviewing the project to keep it on schedule.
Officials briefed the chairman on the latest updates and told him that installation of equipment for the three production units of the powerhouse is in full swing. The six main sections are simultaneously under work, which goes to indicate the urgency required in attaining energy objectives.
To be completed by 2025-26, the addition project will add a large amount of 1,530 MW to the Tarbela hydropower, which will raise the output of the Tarbela complex to 6,418 MW. This capacity building will be an important input into WAPDA’s sustainable, low-cost energy strategy for strengthening Pakistan’s renewable power resources.
The project has been funded by several major international organizations, as it received $390 million from the World Bank, and another $300 million will be supplied by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The officials consider availability of these funds in due time as essential to meet the set completion deadline for the project.
