Los Angeles: Selena Gomez opened up about the ongoing battles she is going through with her mental health, talking candidly about it at the Wondermind Mental Fitness Summit. Speaking during World Mental Health Day, the Ice Cream hitmaker said that she never sleeps in her bedroom because the room fills her with painful memories, adding that her sleeping patterns have been quite turbulent.
According to Gomez, “I’m a little different than my mom because I spent too much time in my bedroom that I actually don’t even sleep in my bedroom anymore because I associate it with such a really dark time.” This is one of the struggles that many deal with through mental health, especially an emotional weight on certain spaces.
The star of Only Murders in the Building recently revealed she has a complicated relationship with her bed, according to Rolling Stone. She counted back her history and realized she passed through a really dark time: “It would start with depression, then turn into isolation, and eventually, I couldn’t even leave my bed.” Gomez described how often this seclusion led to weeks of not doing anything, saying, “Sometimes, I’d stay there for weeks, and even walking downstairs would leave me short of breath.”
Through that experience and openness, she seeks to create awareness of the importance mental health plays in people’s lives and how to seek help if necessary.
In fact, Selena Gomez reminds everyone that nobody is alone in this kind of a struggle. At this moment, her fight is reminding us that struggles with mental health are common and there is strength in vulnerability.
As discussions about mental health continue to grow, so will the sophistication. Now, Selena Gomez joins them by speaking about imperfections most of us hide from those we love.
