On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, UNICEF has named renowned actress Saba Qamar as its first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the critical issues affecting girls and children across the nation.
Saba Qamar expressed her enthusiasm for this role, stating, “It’s an honour to join UNICEF. I will amplify our shared mission to secure every right for every child, wherever I go.” Her recent travels have highlighted the struggles faced by children and women in Pakistan, as well as the positive outcomes of UNICEF’s efforts. “I’m committed to supporting the children and youth of Pakistan, helping them to dream big and achieve their goals,” she added.
In her role as National Ambassador, Qamar will address vital issues, including child marriage, mental health, access to education, gender equality, climate change, and the impacts of violence and poverty on children.
Pakistan faces significant challenges, ranking sixth globally in child marriage, with approximately 19 million child brides. Alarmingly, over half of adolescent girls become pregnant before age 18, leading to serious health risks for both mother and child.
UNICEF warns that without immediate action, child marriage will continue to be a pressing issue in Pakistan. A unified societal approach is crucial to combat this harmful practice and protect young girls, who are an essential resource for the future.
Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, stated, “Saba Qamar is a passionate advocate for the rights of women and girls. We are excited to collaborate with her to highlight the biggest challenges facing children in Pakistan and enhance our efforts to help every child reach their full potential.”
With her new appointment, Saba Qamar aims to use her influence to create meaningful change and secure a brighter future for the children of Pakistan.
