The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified that there has been no official decision to remove taxes on imported mobile phones in Pakistan, contrary to online reports.
The PTA stated that returning Pakistanis will be exempt from these taxes, and non-PTA mobile users can register their devices by simply restarting them with a SIM card inserted. However, this is a temporary facility and not a broader removal of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) taxes on handset registration.
The PTA emphasized that its role is to verify the technical standards of mobile devices for registration through the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) after the payment of FBR taxes. The responsibility for implementing and collecting these taxes lies with the tax collection authority.
The PTA advised citizens to follow information coming from proper channels and avoid sharing details without cross-checking facts. Any updates or changes regarding mobile device taxes should be confirmed directly with the FBR.
Last year, the government extended a facility allowing overseas Pakistanis to register their handsets tax-free through the Temporary Registration System for 120 days during each visit.
The PTA’s clarification aims to end speculation and misinformation surrounding the removal of taxes on mobile phones. Citizens are urged to rely on official sources for accurate information to avoid confusion.
