Jammu & Kashmir legislative assembly passed a resolution seeking a change in Article 370, which hands over special status to the region as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
The resolution was done despite strong opposition from Bharatiya Janata Party members.
The petition, filed by Chaudhary Surinder Singh, National Conference leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, called upon the Indian government to enter into a dialogue that would restore the special status of the region as well as its constitutional guarantees abrogated in 2019.
Chaudhary claimed that steps to revive Article 370 must nurture the gauze legitimate expectations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir while leaving undisturbed national unity.
The resolution sought a balanced approach, putting more importance on the rights and wishes of dwellers in the region.
BJP members reacted strongly against the resolution, which they claimed was not the agenda for the day. They raised slogans inside the Assembly against the motion.
Given the total chaos inside the Assembly, Speaker Abdul Rehman Radha continued with voting and cleared the resolution, which further heightens the widening gap between regional parties and the Centre.
This resolution is the last word so far in a considerable controversy regarding the constitutional status and political future of Jammu & Kashmir.
