IPL 2024: Security threats prompt RCB to cancel training session

Security concerns for Virat Kohli

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) cancelled their practice session on Tuesday due to security concerns surrounding star batter Virat Kohli, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) scheduled for Wednesday.

The Gujarat Police confirmed the cancellation, citing four arrests made over possible terrorist activities, which heightened the security situation. “Virat Kohli is a national treasure, and his security is our utmost priority,” said Vijay Singha Jwala, a police officer.

Kohli, in stellar form this season with 708 runs in 14 matches, is on the cusp of becoming the first player to reach 8,000 IPL runs. The RCB prioritized his safety, opting against a press conference and practice session, while the RR chose to continue with their scheduled practice.

To ensure safety, the security protocol outside RCB’s hotel was intensified, with restricted access even for IPL management members. A ‘green corridor’ was implemented for the RR team to facilitate safe travel between the hotel and training ground.

Players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Riyan Parag skipped the practice session, while RR captain Sanju Samson arrived late due to security protocols.

The IPL Eliminator between RCB and RR will take place as scheduled on Wednesday, May 22, with security remaining a top priority.
