US reaffirms backing for Pakistan’s economic reform agenda

In a recent meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ambassador Blome reiterated Washington’s commitment. The focus? Vital aspects of the US-Pakistan economic partnership.

Pakistan’s quest for a substantial IMF loan to stabilize its economy amid rising external debt and shrinking reserves drives this discussion.

“The United States stands firmly behind Pakistan’s economic reform agenda,” emphasized Ambassador Blome. He underscored the enduring partnership between the two nations.

Addressing key trade and investment matters, Ambassador Blome stressed the pivotal role of the US as Pakistan’s largest export market and a significant investor.

Pakistan recently concluded a $3-billion Stand-By Arrangement with the IMF. However, Islamabad eyes a more extensive Extended Fund Facility for enduring stability.

Analysts anticipate a positive outcome post the government’s budget presentation on June 7. The IMF mission’s recent visit yielded promising progress towards a staff-level agreement.

Nathan Porter, IMF Mission Chief to Pakistan, highlighted the significant strides made in economic stabilization. The aim? A comprehensive reform program supported under the Extended Fund Facility.
